Paul's Warrior Powered Delta Wins Wet Donegal Hill
Updated 17:45 9 September 2009
2009 National Hillclimb Champion Paul O'Connell brought his Warrior powered Delta single seater to the last championship round of the 2009 season. There was stiff competition from the Northern Ireland championship contenders Graham Thompson and Galway's Frank Byrne.
The dry conditions of Saturday were more to the advantage of the higher powered cars of Thompson and Byrne. Simon McKinley used Alan Kessie's Pilbeam to deny Paul 3rd place.
However in the wet conditions on Sunday Paul's superb car control in difficult conditions gave him an excellent win.
Paul was one of the few people happy with the typical Irish weather!
Paul's comment about his favourite car "Piggy"
"4th overall Saturday in the dry,1st gear bust and had to hold it in 4th all weekend! The rain came Sunday and Piggy e-mailed herself up the hill and I won it! That'll do Pig.......that'll do"

Phoenix Park Motor Races 8/9 August 2009
Updated 18:30 14 August 2009
Four club members were in action at the Phoenix Park Motor Races.
Donal Griffin was in his Rover powered Reynard single seater. In qualifying he set the 7th fastest time with a lap of the 1.73 mile circuit in 1minute 13.008s compared to a pole time of 1:07.353
Donal did not finish the race with cooling problems but improved his lap time to 1:10.720

Sunday was also difficult with fellow club Gerard O'Connor having an accident at the exit of the furry causing a 3 lap safety car period aggravating Donal's cooling problems leading to another DNF.
Gerard's accident was just part of a very difficult weekend for him. Saturday the 160bhp single seater he had rented had clutch problems leading to no realsitic times in qualifying and a DNF in the race.
Gerards Saturday car
Gerard's Saturday car
On Sunday Gerard was offered another car, a 340bhp single seater which unfortunately ran wide on the second lap into a concrete barrier causing substantial damage to the car but fortunately Gerard was OK
Paul O'Connell and Denis Hogan Jnr had more success.
Paul finished both historic races in Denis Hogan Snr's Hillman Avenger BRM finishing 7th in both races. Paul's best lap time of the weekend was 1:28.489

A personal report by Denis
Well the weekend went well! I was out in the Libre Saloon race which was made up of 3x Elise Type Rs, an Exige, an Integra, a Tascar, my M3 and 11 Porsches. The organisers decided to run a split grid, Porsches to the front and Saloons to the back - giving the Porsches a 15 second head start.
Saturday:
Had qualifying early on Saturday - the car ran great, but I had no brakes to speak of - qualified 13th out of 19 as a result. Our first race was pushed out from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning
Sunday:
Race 1: got off to an ok start. Brakes were a little better. I was having a dice with a TASCAR as we picked off a few Porsches. Unfortunately the race was red flagged after only four laps due to a crash.
Race 2: I decided that I would redden the brakes during the warm up lap to see if it would help matters - it did! Made a diabolical start. Managed to get around the Tascar and a 944 at the start of the second lap. Got around another few 911s on the next lap. Spotted a 996 and a GT3 at the end of the start finish straight as I was coming onto it - had a few clear laps to reel them in. I managed to catch up with them, unfortunately the lad in the GT3 continuously blocked me even though we were in different classes. Finished 5th in my class and 8th overall. Great craic.
My fastest lap was a 1.20.441 which was over a second faster than the quickest Porsche and over two seconds faster than the GT3 that held me up. My average speed for that lap was 124.598 km/h - not bad in a car that was difficult to stop!
The weekend highlighted a few small issues with the car - we've never done those speeds for prolonged times or distances with the car before, so it's all part of the learning curve.
Overall the weekend was a success - the watching public was very disappointed by the Dublin Grand Prix - most of the lads either broke down or crashed on Saturday. I've been told by a number of people that the Libre Saloon race was the best of all on Sunday. Most overtaking and sideways action! Denis Hogan BMW M3
