General information about Limerick Motor Club

Name: Kevin O’Connor
Date of Birth: 21/05/1990
Home Town: Curraheen North, Askeaton, Co.Limerick, Ireland
Occupation: Student (Studying Automation and Control)
Road Car/Recce Car: Opel Astra.
Rally Car: Citroen C2R2 Max
Hobbies: Car racing, Karting, Motorcross, GYM

When did you first get behind the wheel?

I was very young, maybe 7 or 8, my dad used to let me drive his JCB around the yard, but my first taste of a rallycar was a mark3 escort my brother used for autocross’s, he was testing it and they let me have ago behind the wheel, I was 14 or 15 at the time, there was no looking back from then on.
How did you get involved in Rallying?

My Father has been involved in Rallying for as long as I can remember, he competed against the likes of Frank Maher and Eugene Donnelly in a MarkI BDA and an Opel Manta, so Motorsport has always been part of my life. I first started competing in karting in Dublin at a young age, and I found this a very good platform to start off in. When I turned 17 I couldn’t get my rally license fast enough.

Rally Debut: September 2007, Killarney Forestry Rally
How did you progress from there?

After the Killarney Forestry Rally I competed in Ed O’Callaghan’s 106 in the Banna rally and finished 46th O/A, I then went on to compete in the njrc with a 106 the following year and after a lot of mechanical failures I turned towards the rwd 205 which I claimed my first junior rally victory in. After finishing 9th O/A in the Limerick Mini Stages Rally we upgraded to the c2 for the following year which we narrowly missed out on the NJRC title, in 2011 luck was not on our side and I only finished 1 out of 9 rally’s started. In 2012 having taken the wheel on Marty McCormack’s C2R2 Max I contested the Citroen Racing Trophy where everything finally clicked and we brought home the championship title.
Favourite rallying moment? Winning the Citroen Racing Trophy is the best feeling I have ever had, the effort and sacrifices that has gone into our rallying over the last few years has been huge and to win the title makes all the hard work and bad days gone by all worthwhile.

Favourite stage?

It has to be Beallaghbeama, it’s a real technical stage and really suits my style of driving, its one of few stages that I would want to go back to the start and do all over again, on this year’s Rally of the Lakes we were 7th quickest O/A on that stage and Gary Jennings was only 12seconds quicker in his evo9, that made my weekend!
What was your most frustrating moment in rallying? Circuit of Munster rally 2010, having lead the junior rally from the start, on the way back to parc ferme the car stopped and having eventually got there we were excluded, it was by far the most disappointing finish I have had.
Any big accidents? I have had 3 big accidents, two of them where only 3rd gear accidents but there was one I had while flat in sixth gear, the car stepped out over a crest and hit a tree sideways, but we walked away without a scratch so it we were lucky in a way.

And the Future?

I have been nominated for the Billy Coleman Award so I am currently putting all my efforts into that, as for 2013, we are trying to put together a programme to contest the full BRC either in an R2 car or an R3 car. Watch this space!!

Anything else you would like to say?

I’d like to thank everybody that has helped me from the beginning, I get to drive the car but all the lads have to bear all kinds of weather in service and for that I’m very thankful, and a special thanks to my Dad he makes the biggest sacrifice’s out of everyone to give me the opportunity’s I have been given, if it wasn’t for him I would be standing on the ditches wishing I could compete.
Thanks to my Co-drivers for the year, Ger and Shane for all their help. Thank you to our unsung heroes, Mam and Sinead for making sure we never go hungry at a rally and a special thank you to Tj at SVS, Danny at DM Motor Factors, John at Farrell bus and tyres, Johnny , Henry, Mike, Jack, Gary, Steven, Danny, Raymond, and Liam for all your help this year.

Name : John O’Connor

Age: 24

Lives: Askeaton, Co. Limerick

Occupation: Electrician

Rallycar: Citroen C2R2

Road car: a beautiful left hand drive 93 Opel Astra estate!

When did u first get behind the wheel of a car?

I think I was about 15.. I convinced Mikie Walsh to let me drive his 2 litre RWD mark 3 escort rallycar!!

Where does your interest in motorsport come from?

My Family have always been stuck in motorsport.. My Dad nearly won the National forestry title in the early nineties only he rolled out of contention on the final event! He and Frank Meagher used to have good battles in the wood so I guess that’s something to be proud of…!

First motorsport memory?

I remember been giving the choice to go and watch a rally or play soccer with the local under 8 team… There was only ever going to be one winner! The soccer manager wasn’t too impressed when he found out!

What was your first event?

Circuit of Munster 06… I had a mark 2 escort. I think I finished 51st and 4th in class 10

How did you progress from there?

Didn’t really have the funds to do much so only did the odd local event.  Myself and Carrie Moroney competed in the NJRC in 2009, it was my first proper years rallying I used a RWD Mark 3 Escort… didn’t go as planned..a lot of DNF’s due to mechanical problems.. finished  4tho/a in the championship and 2nd in the 1600 modified class.

Favourite rallying moment?

Winning the Stonethrowers Junior rally this year is up there, it put me back in the National Junior title race and winning my first Junior rally back in Clare in 2009

Favourite Stage?

Doing the Molls gap stage in Killarney for the first time this year… some people say it’s over rated but I think it’s class!! There something special about starting it because of all the greats that have competed on that stage before and to be leading the Juniors after it against all the locals was a nice feeling…!

What your most frustrating moment in rallying?

Donegal Harvest Rally 2012 tested my patience, while on the way to the event an oncoming car lost control and hit me… destroying the service van, trailer and almost the rallycar. Thanks to the generosity of others and a couple of long hours, we reached the start line. The day was looking good, we were on the pace and it looked like all the hard work was paying off until the gear lever snapped off and left us with only 3rd gear. We retired after that stage and with that lost the National Junior title, we still got 3rd O/A in the Championship but that was little comfort on the side of the road in Donegal….!!

Any big accidents?

I think my biggest was splitting a telegraph pole in the 2008 Clare Junior rally… I was using my Brothers Peugeot  rallycar and lost the back of the car over a series of bumps… I think we hit the pole in 5th gear.. Definitely wasn’t a good day at the office!

How has the year gone for you?

Bar my off in Killarney earlier in the year It’s gone relatively good, I’m happy enough with the speed ive shown considering it’s my first year in a front wheel drive car and to make it more awkward she’s left hand drive..! It was disappointing to lose out on the Junior Title, with all the drama we had in build up to the final round, on the day it seemed to be going our way until we retiredbut if rallying was easy everybody would be doing it!

And the future?

Honestly I don’t know.. I put a lot into this year and to lose a the final hurdle was very hard to take… but I’ll dust myself down over the winter and see if there’s anything that will float my boat.. if nothing develops I might just pick and choose my events next year.

Anything else to say?

I want to thank everybody that has helped me from the moment I began rallying, especially Dad I had given up all hope after 2009 but he kept at me for the last 2years to come back and give it another go! Anybody who knows him will tell you he can be very persuasive! I know I won’t live this down but thanks to my Co-drivers Keith and Ger for all their help this year, I know I can be awkward over the little things on the day of an event! Thank you to our unsung heroes, Mam and Sinead for making sure we never go hungry at a rally and a special thank you to Tj at SVS, Danny at DM Motor Factors, Kevin, Henry, Mike, Jack, Gary, Steven, Danny, Raymond, Liam and Keith for all your help this year.

Autocross History

Autocross was a very popular club event from the 1960s to the 1990s when difficulties with getting venues led to the end of this event. Events were mainly held on loose surfaces such as quarries with the occasional grass surface event. The Limerick Motor club event had national championship status for a number of years. the club sometimes held 5 autocross events in a single year. In 2014 a new venue for Autocross event was located near Rear Cross Co Tipperary beginning a new era of Autocross for Limerick Motor Club

Bruff driver Alan Shinnors was the surprise winner of the Limerick Autocross held at Lynchs Quarry, Kilfinny last Sunday. Shinnors who was driving a Ford Escort, clocked a time of six minutes and forty seven seconds on the first of two timed runs. Four seconds in arrears was his nearest challenger Gordon Percy, the 1998 Munster Autocross Champion. Percy from Cloughjordan was driving his Kawasaki special On the final run of four laps of the smooth but demanding track, Percy upped the ante as expected with time of six minutes and forty three seconds, despite suffering a broken driveshaft one hundred metres from the finish. It looked bleak for Shinnors as he set off in pursuit of the high revving Kawasaki. However a split time after two laps revealed he was two seconds ahead and he kept his cool to beat the Tipp man by four seconds.

Limerick drivers dominated the rest of the top six with Michael O Connor Snr. from Athea third in the Mazda 323 4X4 ahead of the Bruff trio-Matthew, Austin and Joseph Shinnors Jnr. The best Limerick Club member was Aidan Walsh, Kilcornan in a Ford Escort and the best novice was George Shinnors also from Bruff in an Opel Corsa.
