Anthony's Report

With blue skies dawning and warmth in the air the early morning discussion amongst the team was what tyre choice to use on the opening loop of 3 stages around the Loughrea town. With the previous day's recce completed in somewhat mixed conditions the decision was taken that the warm temperatures would dry the roads and what slippery places existed it wouldn't matter what tyre choice was elected. After due consideration Anthony and Donal decided to go on the hardest Pirelli available.

With a strong local Galway contingent the pair elected to attack right from the very first stage which they duly did and set the 3rd fastest class time and 14th overall. The pair reported no moments just fast and committed on the notes. The pair continued their clean run on the second stage and third stage to arrive back in to service lying 15th overall and 3rd in class.

After a routine check over by the service crew the pair went back out to tackle the same 3 stages and try close in on local man Neil Pierce who was ahead of them in 2nd place. Anthony had a concern at the start of stage 4 as the oil temperature had sky rocketed to over 130 degrees. With one eye on the road and one eye on the oil temperature Anthony pressed on. At the end of the stage the boys found themselves elevated to second in class after Neil Pierce crashed and was unable to continue. Having figured between stage 4 and stage 5 that the oil temperature concern was down to a faulty sensor the pair pressed on. A little too much perhaps as they had a off road excursion on a slippy 4 right which cost them 15 seconds before they got going again. Anthony felt a vibration in the back of the car for the rest of the stage. At the end of the stage Anthony checked the car and found dirt in the back wheels which was causing the vibration and duly removed the dirt and attacked the famous black road stage to arrive back in to the second service still 2nd in class but now inside the top 10 overall.

The service crew checked the back of the car as a precaution after the stage 5 incident and having found nothing bent sent the crew back out for the final 3 stages of the rally. Anthony and Donal had a good run through 7 but stage 8 proved very tricky as heavy rain fell on the stage making conditions treacherous on hard compound tyres. With one stage to go Anthony couldn't back off as fellow Limerick man Frank Sweeney was just 4 seconds behind and a good run by him on the last stage would see him overtake Anthony for a top 10 position. The wet roads and heavy rain made the last stage hard work but Anthony and Donal kept their noses clean to stay head and jump to 9th overall and second in class after rally leader Donagh Kelly crashed out on the final stage. This result for the boys was their best overall result to date.

Report by Declan Gannon about his day in Galway

"Yes we had a great run on Sunday.  First stage started out shaky enough settling back into the car.  Over shot a junction on SS2, luckly got away with modifying the aerodynamics on the front bumper.  After SS3 we came into service 2nd in class, to our surprise.  The O'Rourke service team did a great job with the running repairs and we had a clean run through the second loop, holding onto 2nd place and 26th O/A at second service.  SS7 was dry and we had our best stage of the day, then came the rain.  SS8 was very slippy on slicks and we had a few little 'moments'.  Half way through the last stage on the Black Road we passed Donnagh Kellys WRC off the road, giving us Class 8 win at the finish line and 18th O/A.  A brilliant job by the Ballyneety Tyres team setting up the car and a fab day all round !!"
