Queries and Responses

Saturday 1 September 2018 the Donegal Hillclimb at Knockalla had six club members competing. Results were Willie Barrett and James O'Rourke third in class, Gerard O'Connor driving James O'Rourke's Punto fourth in class, Ben O'Brien, Declan Gannon and Thonas Sheedy fifth in class. Thomas nearly had an early finish but he "happened to find" a spare drive shaft on the side of the road in the paddock.

Sunday at the hillclimb started sunny but there were concerns about the clouds in the sky. An oil spill during practice delayed matters. Run 1 had an accident (driver OK car not) delaying the event again. At the start of run 2 there was a light mist of rain but as the run went on things became worse. Only 11 cars did run 3 and four on run 4. There were improved results for the Limerick drivers Jamie O'Rourke taking back his usual seat from Gerard O'Connor took second in class 8, Ben O'Brien was second in a very competitive class 3B. Willie Barrett took class 2 third again with Thomas Sheedy fourth.

Cork MC autotest at Ballyvourney
Mike Mulcahy fourth in class b and 10th overall. Rob Fenlon Third B1 13th overall. Mark Guerin second class C 14th overall. Billy Neville first class F 18th overall. John Fenlon second class D 19th overall. This was the final round of the Munster Autotest Championship and first of the Hewison National championship.

Sligo Stages Rally
Ed Synan and Thomas Collins finished 5 in class 14 and 18th overall. Ger Lyons and Steve O'Brien were fourth in class 11F and 40th overall.

And from the previous weekend
Monaghan Endurance Trial 26 August 2018
Father and son team Peter and Aaron Cummins finished first in class A1 and 23rd overall of over 50 finishers. Endurance trials consist of navigation to tests in yards and fields.

All Ireland Activities for Limerick People

The Limerick hurlers may have been busy in Croke park but the Limerick drivers were busy in Galway, Cork, and Wexford .

Sean Moran and co driver Keith Moriarty finshed eigth overall and second in class 13R with their Escort in the Galway Summer Rally.

At the Autotest in Clonakilty Co Cork, Mike Mulcahy took a second overall finish on Sunday improving from fifth on Saturday. Former Limerick Motor Club chairman Eoin Noonan continued his return to motorsport with second in class F both days behind Bill "six seconds" Neville. The Fenlons Rob and John took class podium postions both days.

The second day of the Wexford hillclimb at Killurin saw John Kennedy repeat his third in class 3A. Jamie O'Rourke was fighting with the chicane again hitting the cones on two runs, his father James was better behaved but still finished over two seconds behind Jamie. The first day had John Kennedy 3rd in class 3A 16th overall 54.17s Declan Gannon 3rd in class 10 and 17th overall 54.71s. Jamie O'Rourke 2nd in class 8 and 19th overall in 55.17s. James O'Rourke 7th in class 8 and 28th overall 57.79s, James did have a disagreement with the chicane on run 3 of the 5 runs as did Jamie on run 4. Also at the event were Elaine Higgins-Shinnors as MI safety officer and Gerard O'Connor as startline time keeper.

And more Limerick connections this time in county Kildare. The BRM engined Hillman Avenger of Denis Hogan RIP was in action at the 50th anniversary race meeting at Mondello with Donal Griffin at the wheel, Donal is another former chairman of Limerick Motor Club and has been clerk of the course for the Circuit of Munster. Donal's weekend did not go well, he commented " Unfortunately she blew in wet practice yesterday morning so need to get the 2L into it and rebuild the 1600."

And a historic connection to the club. Barry Baker had the Buckler special at Mondello. This car competed in many club events in the 1950s driven by his father Guy and second owner Alec Malcolm. Barry's uncle Val was famous for his special known as "The Thing". Both Val and Guy were directors and event organisors for the club in the 1950s.

Also at Mondello doing parade laps in his Crossle F2 Car was Brian F Cullen. Brian was a successful driver in hillclimbs, sprints and races in the late 1960s. Brian was a record holder on many hills during that period. He was a contender for the Sexton Trophy finishing third in 1966 and second in 1967. He moved on to the international scene in 1970 and 1971 competing in UK and European F2 races. To finish off he was chairman of Limerick Motor Club in the 1960s as was his father Fred in the 1950s. Brian was also a successful competitor at water ski jumping. Jack Kingston did parade laps in Conor O'Brien's historic Mini.

Keeping the all Ireland theme brothers Maurice and Steve Meskell took third place with their Ford Escort MkI in the Historic section of the Ulster Rally. That means Limerick Motor Club members were competing in all four provinces!

High Drama for Barrett on day one
All enjoyed sunny Sunday

Willie Barrett was taking his Civic to the limit on day one of the Carlow hillclimb held in glorious sunny conditions. At the first chicane he needed some extra space so he climbed the bank at the left and proceeded on two wheels down the road dropping safely onto four wheels after a few meters. He finished third in class 2 and 12th overall.

Declan Gannon (BMW M3) finished 15th overall and was the sole entry in class 10.

Ben took his borrowed BMW M3 to 10th overall and fourth in class 3B

Father and son James and Jamie O'Rourke sharing the family Fiat Punto finished fourth and seventh in class 8 with the son ahead. They had spent the day having close shaves at the chicanes.

Also working at the event were MI safety office Kieran Ambrose and chicane judge of fact Gerard O'Connor.

Day two Sunday led to one change in the club's driver line up Joe Clifford was driving Willie Barrett's Civic, Declan Gannon chose not to drive Sunday. Gerard was on flag location 3 an interesting tight right where drivers were choosing a variety of lines.

Ben O'Brien improved to eight overall and third in class 3B. Willie Barrett was 12th overall and fourth in class 2. Jamie O'Rourke finished fifth in class 8 with his father James only 1.64 seconds behind. Joe Clifford ended up keeping the two O'Rourkes apart.
