TDC Beginners Autotest

Club member Gerard O'Connor changed roles last Sunday at the TDC beginners autotest. In 2017 and 2d018 he did timekeeping and line/pylon penalty judge duties. This year another timekeeper offered him a drive at the beginners autotest. Ciarán Nutty was a brave man as Gerard immediately accepted the offer. Ciarán arrived with his autotest prepared Westfield to Mondello Park on a wet Sunday morning. Gerard was given a quick tour of the car 1600 Kent engine, type e gearbox with only two gears, forward and reverse, 35psi in the front tyres and 22 in the rear definitely not the sort of car Gerard has driven before! The beginner title of the event meant only two short tests that had all the usual elements of an autotest before lunch, after lunch the two tests were joined to be more like a regular autotest. The wet morning gave Gerard a chance to get used to sliding the car, not easy for a hillclimber who’s Formula Vee has no handbrake! Ciarán was trying ram “clutch, steer, handbrake” into Gerard’s head, next it was “be more aggressive”. Gradually it sunk in, so by the final test got through it with just one mistake in the now dry and sunny weather . In the end Gerard totally enjoyed his day, he might have finished last of the 23 entries but he went home with a smile on his face. PS he did provide the penalty judges with a few moments!
